Our Origins and Philosophy

At Northern Native Meadows, we are redefining land management through the intersection of regenerative agricultural practices and strategic silvopasture restoration. Founded by a partnership rooted in professional leadership—including combined expertise in pharmacy, MBA-level business administration, and extensive military service—our operations are built on a foundation of precision, discipline, and integrity.

Our mission is to restore the ecological health of Minnesota landscapes by deploying targeted grazing herds to reclaim areas overwhelmed by invasive species such as Common Buckthorn, Prickly Ash, and Honeysuckle. Unlike conventional methods, we focus on high-impact, ecosystem-first grazing prescriptions that provide a sustainable, non-chemical alternative to land restoration.

Our operational model is defined by strategic foresight and rigorous standards. We are currently compiling technical addendums and practice codes for properties across Aitkin, Wright, and Hubbard Counties to ensure efficient, scalable land-holding management through our affiliate entity, Bucks and Such. Furthermore, our growth strategy is built upon a deliberate acquisition model: we prioritize the development of our own herds by exclusively purchasing weanlings, ensuring the long-term health and adaptability of our stock, and we will never buy mature nannies.

As we prepare for our launch in March 2027, we are actively developing our infrastructure, lease agreements, and herd logistics to meet our ambitious scaling goals. We invite those who value land health and innovative agricultural solutions to partner with us as we grow Northern Native Meadows into a premier force for regenerative land management.

Our Story: A Foundation of Stewardship

Northern Natural Meadows dba Barakah Northern Meadows is the culmination of a lifetime of agricultural experience, professional discipline, and a shared vision for the future of land restoration

A Name, A Purpose, A Blessing

Our identity is a bridge between two worlds. As Northern Natural Meadows, we are defined by our home—the rugged, beautiful landscape of North-Central Minnesota that we are dedicated to stewarding. But beneath this title lies a deeper meaning: Barakah Northern Meadows. In the linguistic tradition that informs our values, Barakah represents the concept of "blessing"—not just as a feeling, but as a tangible, growing abundance. It is the quality of goodness that increases, multiplies, and sustains. We chose this name because it perfectly describes our mission. To us, regenerative agriculture is the act of fostering Barakah on the land. When land is treated with the integrity of Tayyib, and the animals are raised to the standard of Siga, the result is an abundance that benefits the land, the steward, and the final consumer. Northern Natural Meadows is our geography; Barakah Northern Meadows is our spirit

Roots in the Soil

Our story began long before this enterprise. Joel and I grew up on a working farm, immersed in the rhythm of the seasons and the cycle of production. From alfalfa, wheat, and soybeans to corn, registered Black Angus, and hogs, we learned the realities of land management from the ground up. This upbringing taught us more than just farming—it instilled a deep-seated respect for the land and the necessity of agricultural integrity.

A Legacy of Leadership

Our paths evolved into distinct professional careers, yet we remained grounded in the values of our upbringing.

  • Military Leadership: As a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Joel Olson brings a high standard of strategic planning and operational excellence to our land management. His experience as a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve informs the precision with which we execute our grazing prescriptions and project management.

  • Systems & Science: Lance Olson’s background as a Doctor of Pharmacy and MBA drives the technical and structural side of our operations. I apply the same level of analytical rigor—from meticulous business planning to biological systems management—that I have utilized throughout my career. As a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, I share Joel’s commitment to service, duty, and disciplined execution

The Modern Mission

Today, we have reunited those early lessons with our professional experience to build Northern Natural Meadows dba Barakah Northern Meadows. We are not just moving herds; we are applying a disciplined, systematic approach to land restoration. We are committed to the principle of Tayyib—the pursuit of goodness and purity—in everything we produce

Big Ideas, Real Impact.

II. Origins: A Lifetime of Stewardship

The path to this work is the sum of careers spent serving, observing, and learning. From military service—which included experiences ranging from beginning as a private to reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army—to multi-continental exposures in diverse ecosystems, the mission has always been rooted in a commitment to being a student of the land. The deepest roots, however, remain in the North. As enthusiastic outdoorsmen, decades have been spent fishing the walleye waters of Lake Winnibigoshish and hiking the rugged trails of state parks.

The spark for this mission came when that professional focus was turned toward a 40-acre plot of deer hunting land. As any local who has walked the ground can attest, that land had become an impenetrable "jungle" of extremely heavy brush—a reality confirmed by an NRCS agent. It became clear that industrial methods were not stewardship—they were destruction. A decision was made that there was a better way.

A fundamental truth of this operation is a profound, intuitive rapport with animals. Having grown up naturally training dogs, and possessing a lifelong curiosity that has led to the training of everything from house cats to wild corvids, there is a clear understanding that the bond between a guardian and a herd is built on consistency and respect. This work goes beyond mere brush clearing; it is about restoring the wild, open integrity of the landscape so that it can be reclaimed for hunting, hiking, and future generations.

III. The Standard of Excellence

We believe that extraordinary quality is built in stages. Each of our standards builds upon the last, ensuring that when we provide Siga, it is the result of a complete and intentional process.

  • The Foundation: Tayyib - Tayyib is our starting point—the core principle of wholeness, ethical integrity, and purity. Before we consider the animal, we consider the responsibility we owe to the land and the life we steward. Without this foundational commitment to "what is good," the rest of our work would lose its meaning. Tayyib is the soil from which our entire mission grows.

  • The Practice: Free-Range - Upon the foundation of Tayyib lies the practice of Free-Range. This is our commitment to natural behavior. By allowing our livestock to roam the diverse, native pastures of the transition zone, we ensure they grow according to their biological nature. Free-Range is the essential exercise of freedom that allows an animal to develop the health and vigor necessary to reach its full potential.

  • The Expression: Siga - Siga is the ultimate expression of the first two standards. It is the culinary realization of Tayyib ethics and Free-Range health. Inspired by the Ethiopian reverence for the highest quality, forage-finished meat, Siga is the pinnacle of flavor, texture, and nutrient density. It is not an alternative to the others; it is their manifestation in a premium, perfected product.

IV. Meet the Herd: Precision Grazing

We approach herd genetics with the same surgical precision applied to clinical or strategic operations, focusing entirely on performance, resilience, and meat quality. We deliberately avoid "show-ring" genetics—such as Boer goats or specialized dairy breeds—which lack the forage efficiency and parasite resistance required for the rugged, wet soil types of our northern interior. Instead, we curate our herd composition to meet the specific ecological demands of the land, resulting in a balanced, highly functional grazing unit.

  • The Hair Lamb Advantage: We focus exclusively on hair lamb production, prioritizing Katahdin and St. Croix genetics. These breeds are selected for their superior, mild flavor, self-shedding efficiency, and unmatched parasite resistance, which are essential for thriving in our damp, challenging soil environments.

  • The Goat Precision Prescription: We utilize highly intentional crosses, focusing on Kiko genetics to build a foundation of extreme hardiness and foraging vigor. These genetics are then blended into targeted, "prescribed" mixes like the Spanikos—a cross engineered specifically to deliver optimal brush-clearing performance and metabolic resilience within the moisture-heavy glacial lake plains and river valleys of Northern Minnesota.

  • A Commitment to Security: We utilize permanent, high-tensile fencing engineered specifically for the rugged terrain and predator pressure of Northern Minnesota. As our operations scale toward our 2027 launch, we are incorporating professional livestock guardians—including Jennies and Great Pyrenees—to provide an active, protective layer. By training these guardians alongside our herds from the start with the same consistency and respect applied to all animal training, we ensure a seamless integration that keeps the landscape safe.

Our Service Area: The Heart of the Transition Zone

We focus our operations within the rich, ecologically diverse transition belt of North- Central Minnesota—stretching from the rolling fertile plains of the south, through the mosaic of glacial lake beds, and into the hardwood transition forests of the north.

  • The Glacial Mosaic: We operate across complex terrains sculpted by glacial movement, characterized by a mix of rolling till plains, sandy outwash deposits, and rich, moisture-retaining basins.

  • The Hardwood/Conifer Ecotone: We work where the Big Woods deciduous forests meet the northern boreal canopy, where invasive, fire-dependent brush threatens native woodlands and wetland margins.

  • Hydraulic Diversity: From the drainage-rich river valleys to the peatlands and glacial lake basins, our herds are adapted to the specific moisture regimes and soil types found throughout this northern interior

VI. Market & Culinary: The No-Waste Vision

At Northern Natural Meadows dba Barakah Northern Meadows, we believe in the sanctity of the animal. Our culinary model is defined by utilization and intention.

  • Whole-Animal Stewardship: We are developing an "ingredient branding" model that extends beyond the kitchen. While our primary focus is the production of nutrient-dense, grass-finished proteins, we are committed to the future of regenerative leather goods.

  • Sourcing the Source: When you partner with us or purchase our products, you are bypassing the industrial supply chain. You are accessing meat that has been raised on our land, under our direct management, in the specific climate of the Minnesota transition zone.

  • The Ethiopian Standard: In the deep culinary traditions of Ethiopia, meat is not merely a commodity—it is a centerpiece of hospitality, ritual, and health. We select our breeds specifically for their ability to thrive on native forage, resulting in superior texture and nutrient density. Our meat is for those who value the story behind the bite, raised to meet the exacting standards of the discerning palate.
